Saving Daylight
In honor of this weekends adjustment of the clocks, a few interesting facts about our old friend Daylight Savings Time:
- It was invented by Benjamin Franklin who thought it would help people save money on candles.
- It was first widely implemented around the world during World War I as a way to save on energy costs but was eliminated after the war.
- It was widely implemented again during World War II.
- Originally each locality could decide when they wanted it to start and end, resulting in mass confusion.
- In the U.S. it was reenacted a third time in 1973 due to the oil crisis.
- In 2007, it will get longer as it is officially extended by three to four weeks. March 11 through November 4th.
I hope everyone enjoyed their extra hour of sleep this weekend, now get back to work. Or, read the details on WikiPedia and Seize the Daylight.
